Additional living expense
Glossary

Additional Living Expense (ALE) / Loss of Use

Coverage that reimburses the reasonable additional costs of living elsewhere while your home is uninhabitable due to a covered loss.

What's covered

ALE pays the difference between your normal living costs and your elevated costs while your home is uninhabitable. Typical covered expenses include:

  • Hotel or temporary-rental accommodation
  • Meals (over and above normal grocery spending)
  • Additional transportation (if relocated far from work/school)
  • Pet boarding
  • Storage of belongings

What's not covered

  • Your normal expenses (mortgage, normal utilities)
  • Luxury upgrades beyond comparable housing
  • Costs that aren't "reasonable and necessary"

How to document

Keep every receipt. Photograph the uninhabitable home. Track dates. Carrier-submitted ALE claims frequently get reduced for insufficient documentation: a public adjuster ensures the documentation supports the full claim.
