All Other Perils (AOP) Deductible

The all other perils deductible is the flat dollar amount you pay out of pocket on a claim caused by anything other than a hurricane or named storm, such as a kitchen fire or a burst pipe.

How the AOP deductible works

A Florida homeowner policy usually carries two kinds of deductible. The hurricane or named-storm deductible applies to windstorm losses from a named system and is calculated as a percentage of the dwelling limit. The all other perils deductible, often shown as AOP, applies to every other covered cause of loss: fire, a burst pipe, theft, sudden water damage, a falling tree, and so on. Unlike the percentage-based hurricane deductible, the AOP deductible is almost always a flat dollar figure, such as $1,000 or $2,500, listed on your declarations page.

Which deductible applies to your loss

Only one deductible applies to a given claim, and the trigger is the cause of loss. A pipe that bursts on an ordinary day comes out of the AOP deductible. Wind damage from a named hurricane comes out of the hurricane deductible, which is usually much larger. The distinction matters most in mixed events: if wind-driven rain and a separate plumbing failure both cause damage, the cause assigned to each portion determines which deductible the carrier subtracts.

Florida specifics

Carriers sometimes apply the larger hurricane deductible to a loss that was not actually caused by a named storm, which increases your out-of-pocket share and lowers the payout. Your declarations page controls which deductibles exist and their amounts, and the cause of loss controls which one applies. If a carrier applies a hurricane deductible to a non-hurricane loss, that is a disputable calculation.
