What it is
An EUO is a sworn deposition: you answer the carrier's questions under penalty of perjury, with a court reporter transcribing. It is an investigative tool carriers use on larger or questioned claims.
When it's used
Carriers typically invoke EUO when:
- The claim is large (fire loss, significant theft)
- There are questions about cause of loss
- There is suspicion of fraud or misrepresentation
Policyholder rights
You have the right to counsel (or a public adjuster) at your EUO. You should never attend an EUO without preparation: your answers, under oath, become binding evidence.
What to prepare
- All claim documentation
- All relevant policy sections
- A timeline of events
- Anticipated questions about the loss and the claim
