Short answer: You have one year from the date of loss to file a new or reopened hurricane claim, and 18 months for a supplemental claim, under Florida Statute 627.70132 post-SB 2A. The clock runs from the date of loss, not the date you discover damage, so act promptly.
The deadlines
Under Fla. Stat. 627.70132 (post-SB 2A):
- New claim: 1 year from date of loss
- Reopened claim: 1 year from date of loss
- Supplemental claim: 18 months from date of loss
Which deadline applies to your claim
- You haven't filed yet: you have 1 year from the date of loss.
- You filed and the claim was denied or closed: reopening requires filing within 1 year.
- You filed, were paid, but later discovered more damage: supplemental claim within 18 months.

Important: "date of loss" not "date of discovery"
The deadline runs from when the loss occurred, not from when you discovered it. If Hurricane Milton struck in October 2024, your new-claim deadline is October 2025. If you didn't discover roof damage until December 2024, you still have the clock running from October 2024.
What to do as deadline approaches
- File the claim with the carrier (formal written notice)
- Document the loss and the date of loss
- Retain a public adjuster immediately if coverage or scope is contested
